How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets Without Hiring a Painter: The Process That Actually Lasts

Painting kitchen cabinets is one of the most cost-effective kitchen renovations available. A full cabinet painting project costs $150 to $400 in materials. Cabinet replacement for the same visual transformation costs $5,000 to $25,000. The critical qualifier is that it must be done correctly — cabinet paint jobs that fail within a year almost always failed because the preparation was inadequate, not because of paint quality.

Remove All Doors, Drawers, and Hardware

Every door and drawer should be removed and painted separately on sawhorses or a flat surface. Do not paint cabinet doors while they’re hung — runs and brush marks on vertical surfaces are much harder to control. Label each door and its position with a numbered piece of tape on the inside surface before removal. Remove all hinges, knobs, and pulls — paint that gets into hinge holes makes reinstallation difficult.

Clean and Sand

Kitchen cabinets accumulate cooking grease that prevents paint adhesion and causes peeling. Clean every surface with a degreasing cleaner — TSP substitute, Krud Kutter, or commercial cabinet prep cleaners. Clean, rinse with clean water, and allow to dry completely. Lightly sand all surfaces with 150-grit sandpaper to scuff the existing finish. Wipe with a tack cloth to remove all dust.

Prime and Finish

Apply a dedicated cabinet primer — Zinsser BIN shellac-based primer is excellent — with a foam roller for flat surfaces and a fine-bristle brush for details. Allow to dry fully and lightly sand again with 220-grit before the finish coat. Use a cabinet-specific paint or high-quality trim enamel in semi-gloss. Apply with a small foam roller and a fine-bristle trim brush for profiles. Two coats with light 220-grit sanding between coats produces a smooth finish. Allow the final coat to cure fully — most cabinet paints reach handling hardness in 24 hours but full cure that resists chipping takes two to four weeks.
