The Handy Household started as a running document of things I figured out the hard way about maintaining and improving my house. I bought my first home in 2016 with functional skills that were somewhere between “can hang a picture” and “once changed an outlet” — not nowhere, but nowhere near adequate for the steady stream of maintenance needs, unexpected repairs, and improvement projects that homeownership produces.

My name is Ryan Foster. I’m a civil engineer by training, which means I’m comfortable with math and materials but came to homeowner-specific skills the same way most people do — learning as I went. What I found when I started looking for guidance online was that most home improvement content fell into two categories: the glossy magazine version that assumes a contractor budget and professional tools, and the DIY absolutist version that sometimes underestimates when professional help is genuinely the right answer. I wanted something in the middle.

Every guide on this site reflects something I’ve actually done or that someone I know personally has done. We write about what it looks like when you’re kneeling under the sink at 7 PM on a Tuesday trying to figure out why the P-trap is still leaking after you tightened it twice.
