How to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring: The Beginner-Friendly Upgrade That Transforms a Room

Luxury vinyl plank flooring from brands like LifeProof, COREtec, and Shaw transformed what is possible for homeowners who want to upgrade floors without professional installation. The click-lock system requires no glue, no nails, and no specialized tools. I installed LVP in my basement and bathroom in a single weekend, and the total project cost was less than half of what installers quoted me.

Acclimate and Prepare the Subfloor

Leave flooring boxes in the installation room for at least 48 hours so planks reach equilibrium with room conditions before being locked together. Then check the subfloor: it must be flat to within 3/16 of an inch over a 10-foot span. High spots cause planks to flex and break locking joints. Fill low spots with leveling compound. Secure any squeaky boards to the subfloor with screws. A subfloor prep job that takes an extra hour saves you from a floor that squeaks for years.

Plan Your Layout

Run planks parallel to the longest wall or the main source of natural light. Calculate your starting row width so you don’t end with very narrow pieces along either wall. Adjust the starting row so the first and last rows are roughly equal width — at least half a plank wide. This planning takes fifteen minutes and prevents a frustrating visual result.

Installation

Start in a corner with the tongue side facing the wall. Maintain a 1/4-inch expansion gap at all walls using spacers. Click each plank into the previous one at a slight angle, pressing down until the joint snaps. Stagger end joints between rows by at least six inches. Cut planks with a utility knife by scoring deeply and snapping — no power saw required for straight cuts.

Finishing

Install transition strips at doorways and where the new floor meets other materials. Install or reinstall baseboards to cover the expansion gap. Do not caulk between the flooring and baseboard in a way that restricts expansion and contraction — the floor needs room to move seasonally.
