How to Repair Hardwood Floor Scratches, Gaps, and Squeaks Without Refinishing
Hardwood floors accumulate evidence of service over years: scratches from furniture, gaps from seasonal wood movement, squeaks from boards that have separated from the subfloor. None of these necessarily require refinishing the entire floor — a project that costs $3 to $8 per square foot professionally. Many can be addressed locally for a few dollars in materials.
Surface Scratches
Light scratches that haven’t penetrated the stain can be handled with Minwax Hardwood Floor Reviver, which fills and disguises light scratches while refreshing the sheen. For deeper scratches that go through the finish into the stain, a color-matched wood filler applied with a putty knife, dried, lightly sanded, and sealed with finish produces a repair that from standing height is invisible.
Board Gaps: Seasonal vs. Permanent
Before filling gaps, determine whether they’re seasonal or permanent. Gaps that appear in winter and close in summer are normal seasonal movement and should not be filled with rigid filler — which causes boards to buckle when they expand. Use flexible filler or leave seasonal gaps alone. Permanent year-round gaps can be filled with color-matched wood filler or tinted rope caulk.
Squeaks: Lubricate or Secure
For squeaks where boards rub against each other, work powdered graphite or talcum powder into the joint between boards and walk on the boards to work it in. If the board has separated from the subfloor, use a Squeak-No-More kit — countersinking screws that pull the board tight to the subfloor and snap off below the surface so the hole can be filled and concealed. From below in an unfinished basement, driving screws up through the subfloor into the problem board is the cleanest fix.
